Windsor Star nominated for seven Ontario awards
A total of 11 reporters and photographers at the Windsor Star have combined for seven 2017 Ontario Newspaper Awards nominations. Leading the way are photographers Dan Janisse, Dax Melmer and former Star employee Jason Kryk with two nominations each. Sarah Sacheli has been nominated for beat reporting for her portfolio of stories covering Windsor courts. Anne Jarvis has been nominated for her columns and opinion writing. Nominated in the special project category for their series of stories on the opioid crisis in Windsor are reporters Brian Cross, Craig Pearson and Trevor Wilhelm and photographers Tyler Brownbridge, Dan Janisse and Jason Kryk. “Great photography and teamwork are two of our newsroom’s biggest strengths,” said Windsor Star editor-in-chief Ellen van Wageningen.
“All of these nominations are well deserved by Windsor Star journalists who are always striving for the best.”
Janisse is nominated in the feature photography category for his stunning photo of a rainbow arching over a barn at sunset near Manning Road and Highway 401. Veteran photographer Nick Brancaccio is nominated in the spot news photography category for a picture of two Windsor police officers arresting a man with their guns drawn after a stabbing. Melmer is nominated in the sports photography category. Nominated in the video production category is Jason Kryk, who left the Star in November 2017. Among the Windsor Star’s sister papers in Southwestern Ontario, The London Free Press had eight nominations and The Woodstock Sentinel-Review earned a pair. The Chatham Daily News, Stratford Beacon Herald and Simcoe Reformer have one each.
The annual awards recognize exceptional journalism by reporters, photographers, videographers, graphic artists and editors across all daily newspapers in Ontario outside Toronto.
The awards will be presented on April 28 at Postmedia Place in Toronto.
