Lancers’ Mitton earns national U Sports track and field honour
Sarah Mitton became the first member of the Windsor Lancers to be named the U Sports outstanding female field performer in more than a decade on Thursday. A fourth-year thrower, Mitton accepted the award on Thursday before the start of the U Sports track and field championships. Ranked No. 1 in the shot put, Mitton defended her title at the OUA championships with a throw of 16.82 metres — nearly three metres ahead of her closest rival.
The throw was a new personalbest performance and marked the second time this season she has broken the school record. Mitton added a second gold medal at the OUA championships with 16.47 metres in the weight throw to help the Lancers win a silver medal in the team competition. That marked the first time the women’s team had been on the podium in six years. Mitton is the first Lancer to win the award since Kelley (Park) Cavanagh, a Sandwich Secondary School product, claimed the award in 2005-06.
MITTON GRABS SILVER
Mitton captured the first medal for the Lancers as the U Sports track and field championships opened on Thursday at the Dennis Fairall Fieldhouse at the St. Denis Centre. Mitton, who was seeded second in the women’s weight throw event, took the silver medal with a new personal-best throw of 17.79 metres. Teammate Leanna Garcia finished in sixth place with a season-best throw of 15.45 metres.
NOBLES TO OFSAA
The Belle River Nobles will get a chance to defend the team’s OFSAA boys single/double-A hockey title.
After losing the SWOSSAA championship on Tuesday in triple overtime, the Nobles needed to beat the Lambton-Kent Cardinals on Thursday in the SWOSSAA challenge game to earn the area’s second spot at this year’s OFSAA. Eric Larue chipped a rebound home with 27 seconds left in the first overtime period as the Nobles beat the Cardinals 3-2 at the Atlas Tube Centre.
Trevor Larue and Patrick McManus had the other goals for Belle River, which got another strong performance in net from Luka Dobrich.
The Nobles now head to OFSAA, March 19 to 23 in Collingwood.
