Education not as bad as claimed

Re: Education system needs reform, letter by Gordon Lin, Feb. 24.

Although most, including myself, would agree that the public education system in Ontario needs ongoing assessment and appropriate modification, Mr. Lin’s perspective is far too general and somewhat misinformed. The statement that “most students have to wake up early” seems inane as students, parents and the workforce tend to get up early. Getting five to six hours of sleep is the norm for many, and most would agree that eight to 10 hours is more desirable and beneficial. However, most are also dependent on social media and electronic interests that we readily become addicted to and therefore sacrifice time better spent elsewhere.

I am curious as to how Mr. Lin forms his conclusion that the system “forces students who are ahead behind,” although I concur that it does push students behind ahead. And his assumption that “elementary students have to deal with short or no breaks” is preposterous. Although four years retired, I’m familiar with the system used here in Essex County, allowing a nutrition/activity break after each 100 minute learning block in the day. They also engage in two to four, physical education periods per cycle, with daily physical activity encouraged on the off days.

In over 30 years of elementary teaching, I don’t recall any of my classes “sitting around all day.” Students may have homework, including review and prep for tests or assignments, but this time is generally utilized and intended to complete tasks not finished in class time, reinforce skills taught, and prepare for assessment and evaluation as needed. Many choose to engage in a variety of after-school activities, socialize with family and friends, and indulge in electronic choices — worthwhile options to a point. The focus should remain on the individual’s management of time available and, with the guidance of parents, should accommodate all aspects of your daily activities.
