LaSalle plans for transportation future
With bustling neighbourhoods, increased traffic and growing demand for more areas to safely walk or cycle, LaSalle has embarked on an in-depth analysis of its transportation network.
The yearlong study of the transportation master plan will not only include roadways but also active transportation infrastructure such as trails and paths in addressing current and future needs of a town that has seen a 1.1 per cent annual growth rate — compared to .5 per cent for Essex County — along with an aging population, according to a project report.
If that growth trend continues, LaSalle could be looking at an additional 5,000 to 10,000 new residents over the next 10 to 20 years, said Larry Silani, the town’s director of development and strategic initiatives.
Silani said administration was getting many questions about traffic patterns and congestion from residents before the study was launched.
And as the community continues to grow, transportation needs change, he said.
Silani said the town’s goal is to be proactive in looking at ways to enhance the flow of people and vehicles while also providing facilities for healthy living and recreational activities such as walking, running and bicycling.
The $124,000 study, which is partially funded through the County Wide Active Transportation System, includes an “agefriendly” focus.
