2017 murder suspect nabbed by police in Calgary

- DALSON CHEN

A man wanted by Windsor police on a charge of first-degree murder is now in custody after he was found and arrested in Calgary last week.

Sumar Al-Rubayi, 19, made a court appearance in Windsor on Tuesday to face charges in connection with the November 2017 shooting death of Jarvas Anthony Scott (Poberezny).

Police in Calgary informed Windsor Police Service on July 6 that Al-Rubayi had been arrested in their jurisdiction. Investigators with the Windsor police major crimes branch travelled to Calgary on Monday to take Al-Rubayi into custody.

The capture of Al-Rubayi completes the arrests of all persons who investigators believe were involved in the fatal shooting of Scott on Nov. 4, 2017.

In total, three males have been arrested and charged with firstdegree murder, and one female has been charged with accessory to murder after the fact. Along with Al-Rubayi, the accused are: Idrisso Palmer, 19; Neil Tap, 20; and Dazzmirhal Scott, 24. Police have said Al-Rubayi also goes by the name Ali Habib. In addition to the murder charge, he faces two counts of breach of recognizance.

According to investigators, the victim — Scott — was attending a party in a residence in the 1100 block of Heathfield Court in the Little River Acres area during the early hours of Nov. 4. Around 1:30 a.m., a white Pontiac Torrent SUV arrived at the location carrying a number of males. Investigators believe Scott exited the residence and became involved in an altercation with the males from the SUV — resulting in “numerous shots” being fired. A chaotic scene ensued, with some males fleeing the area in the white SUV.

Scott was left suffering from gunshot wounds. He succumbed to his injuries later the same day in hospital.

Windsor police found the white Pontiac Torrent on Nov. 5. The next day, they located and arrested Palmer, Tap, and Dazzmirhal Scott.
