Get soaked — in fun — at annual Water Balloon Fight

- DALSON CHEN

Tens of thousands of water balloons are set to fly once more at Lanspeary Park this Sunday for Spotted in Windsor’s yearly mass water balloon toss.

The charitable summer event allows any member of the public to engage in a harmless water fight — with Spotted in Windsor providing all the ammunition.

“We encourage people to bring their own water guns, too,” said organizer Joe Jraige of Spotted in Windsor. “We want this to be as wet an event as possible.”

It’s the fourth edition of the annual gathering. What started as a simple water ballon fight has grown into an all-day party. Along with three group water balloon tosses, the event area will offer a wet n’ wild obstacle course, a dunk tank, face painting, and more fun family activities.

There’ll be visits from Windsor firefighters, the Windsor Spitfires, and the Windsor Express. A barbecue will be cooking up hotdogs and hamburgers for sale.

This year, the event will have a special guest: Windsor’s own NHL defenceman Trevor Murphy of the Arizona Coyotes, who will be signing autographs at 11:30 a.m. And, of course, there’ll be water balloons: About 50,000 of them. Jraige said last year’s event drew around 1,825 people. “It keeps getting bigger and bigger.”

“We keep track by the wrist bands we give out,” Jraige added. “Next year is our fifth-year anniversary, and we’re already planning things for it.”

“It’s a great event for the community. It’s family-friendly, and it’s for a great cause.”

All proceeds go to Ronald McDonald House Charities. Spotted in Windsor’s annual Water Balloon Fight happens on Sunday at Lanspeary Park (1250 Langlois Ave. at Ottawa Street). Event area opens 11:30 a.m. Tosses of 5,000 balloons will happen at 1 and 2:30 p.m. The big toss of 40,000 balloons will happen at 4:30 p.m. All ages welcome. No registration required. Activity tickets are $1 each. Participation in each water balloon toss costs two to three activity tickets. Obstacle course, face painting, and dunk tank also cost two to three activity tickets each. Visit winwbf.com for more information.
