The Detroit Lions began roster trimming on Friday that will eventually get the team number down to 53 players by Saturday at 4 p.m. The Lions cut a dozen players on Friday, but still have 75 players on the roster.

Defensive end Cam Johnson was one of three vested veterans released. Johnson had spent time with Cleveland, Indianapolis and San Francisco. Cornerbacks Dexter McDougle, who previously played with New Orleans, Philadelphia and the New York Jets, and Sterling Moore, who has played with New Orleans, Tampa Bay, Dallas and New England, were also let go.

Wide receiver Brian Brown, who was only signed on Aug. 4 after spending last year on the Dallas Cowboys’ practice squad was cut. Undrafted defensive tackle Josh Fatu was released along with offensive tackle Jamar McGloster, linebacker Chad Meredith, guard John Montelus, wide receiver Teo Redding, and defensive end Jeremiah Valoaga were also let go along with tight end Marcus Lucas, who has been on the practice squad with Oakland, Miami, Chicago, Seattle and Indianapolis, and defensive tackle Christian Ringo, who spent time with Green Bay and Cincinnati. Meanwhile, the club placed safety Marcus Cromartie, who has previously spent time with Houston, Seattle, Buffalo, San Francisco, Cleveland and San Diego, on injured reserve. Windsor’s Dakoda Shepley was one of 18 players cut by the New York Jets on Friday.

The 23-year-old Shepley, who was given a free-agent deal by the Jets in April, played at the University of British Columbia.

The six-foot-five, 290-pound offensive guard was the fifth overall pick in this year’s Canadian Football League Draft by the Saskatchewan Roughriders, but he could still land on New York’s practice squad.
