Windsor’s Langlois helps boost Canada at FIBA

Windsor’s Miah-Marie Langlois helped Canada to a 2-0 start at the FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup in Tenerife, Spain.

The 27-year-old Langlois, who is a Catholic Central high school product and University of Windsor grad, had eight points, six rebounds, six assists and two steals in Canada’s 82-63 win over South Korea on Sunday. Langlois, who is Canada’s starting point guard, had seven points, four rebounds and three assists on Saturday as Canada opened played in the 16-team tournament with an 81-50 win over Greece. Canada (2-0) closes out pool play on Tuesday against France (1-1) looking for a win to advance directly to quarter-final play.

Vipers win: Aaron Shaw had a goal and two assists to lead the LaSalle Vipers to a 5-3 win over the Strathroy Rockets in Western Conference play in the Greater Ontario Junior Hockey League on Saturday.

Cody Schneider and Jack Bowler each added a goal and an assist for the Vipers (2-2-0-0), while Brett Vorshuk and Bradley Vincent added single goals against the Rockets (0-4-0-0) with goalie James Walker finishing with 29 saves for the win.

Admirals split: The Amherstbur­g Admirals beat the Dresden Kings 5-0 in the club’s home opener in the Bill Stobbs Division of the Provincial Junior Hockey League on Sunday at the Libro Centre. Captain Austin Jennings scored twice in Sunday’s win as the Admirals (2-2-0-0) handed Dresden (4-1-0-0) its first loss of the season. Christian McBride, Josh Talerico and Ty Moss also scored for Amherstbur­g, while goalie Ben Larder made 15 saves for the shutout. On Saturday, the Mooretown Flags scored the first three goals of the game and held off the visiting Admirals 4-2.

Caleb Paquette and Josh Talerico scored for the Admirals against the Flags (2-0-0-1), who held a 4034 edge in shots.

Saints baseball: The St. Clair Saints baseball teams split a pair of doublehead­ers in OCAA baseball. On Sunday, Saints shortstop Kevin Dion became the OCAA’s all-time hits leader with two more in a 2-1 loss to Durham College in Oshawa in the opener. In the second game, pitcher Evan Ferguson earned the decision for the Saints (8-4) in an 11-1 mercy victory. Tyler Lansley had two hits and drove in three runs. Roberto Duncan and Kyle Gagnon also had two hits each. On Saturday, the Saints scored a 3-2 win over Humber College in Etobicoke, but lost the second game 6-2. Miguel Cienfuegos got the win in the opener for the Saints and Michael Beale picked up the save. Dion and Garick Godard had two hits each. Godard had two hits and drove in a run in the second game for the Saints.

Saints softball: The St. Clair Saints took three of four games in OCAA women’s softball.

The Saints split a doublehead­er with Humber College on Sunday at Mic Mac Park. St. Clair won the first game 7-6 with Olivia Elliott getting the win. Outfielder Megan Lumley had three hits, including a three-run homer, and drove in four runs. Michaela Rilett also had three hits.

St. Clair (13-3) dropped the second game 9-3. Kim Moroun and Lauryn Schram had two hits each for the Saints.

On Saturday, the Saints beat Seneca College 8-1 and 10-0 at Mic Mac Park. Elliott got the win in both games. Moroun, Jordan Taylor and Rilett had two hits each in the opener. Rilett had three hits and drove in two runs in the second game.

LaNcers soccer: The University of Windsor Lancers men’s team split a pair of weekend OUA soccer games.

The Lancers (4-4-2) made Celso Carapau’s goal in the 16th minute stand up in a 1-0 win over McMaster (4-3-2) in Hamilton on Sunday with keeper Greg Chac posting a clean sheet.

On Saturday, the Lancers fell 3-1 to Brock (3-5-1) in St. Catharines. Stefan Milidrag ’s goal in the 60th minute tied it briefly for the Lancers.

The women’s team fell 2-1 at McMaster (3-3-3) on Sunday with Jamie O’Neil scoring the lone goal for the Lancers (2-4-4). Kaylea Cunliffe scored twice in Saturday ’s 2-1 win over Brock (2-4-3) in St. Catharines.

Saints soccer: The St. Clair Saints women’s soccer team rolled to an 8-1 win over the Lambton Lions on Saturday in OCAA women’s action in Sarnia. Tira Copeland and Cassandra Rose-Medeiros each scored three goals for the Saints (2-2-1), while Ryan Morneau and Aleah Berenz also scored against the Lions (05-0).

Bastien Aquilera’s penalty kick goal was the difference as the St. Clair men’s team beat Lambton 2-1 on Saturday in Sarnia. Petar Stevkovsk scored both goals for the Saints (2-3-0) against Lambton (0-5-0).
