Maurice Chauvin is this year’s winner of the Conservation Farm Award. Chauvin is a sixth-generation farmer who farms in Pointe-aux-Roches (Stoney Point) with the help of his son Shawn and his father Robert. The winner was announced at the Essex Soil & Crop Improvement Association annual meeting Thursday. Some of the conservation factors that distinguished Chauvin include the use of cover crops such as oats, tilling the soil less, limiting soil erosion and fertilizer run-off, and advanced software and GPS technology to improve surface drainage and preserve top soil. The farm has participated in the CanadaOntario Environmental Farm Plan program since its beginning. The Essex Conservation Farm Award is sponsored annually by the Essex Soil and Crop Improvement Association, and the Essex Region Conservation Authority.
