Eyewear thieves knew cameras were watching

They knew what they were after, and they knew they would be recorded.

Windsor police have released security camera images of the burglars who took thousands of dollars worth of eyewear from The Walkerville Optical at 1474 Ottawa St. earlier this week.

The images show two males in the same outfit, meant to conceal their identities as much as possible.

Both suspects wore black winter jackets with hoods trimmed in fake fur, black gloves, faded blue jeans, black running shoes with white soles and scarves that covered their faces.

One of the suspects carried a blue duffel bag, which was used to carry out “a large quantity of unique eyewear” from the business, police said. Investigators believe there was a third suspect: A driver in a getaway vehicle that was parked on the south side of Ottawa Street while the other two men broke into the store.

The vehicle is described as a black four-door SUV, possibly a Chevy Blazer circa 2005 to 2010. Windsor police responded on Monday around 4:30 a.m. to the store’s alarm system. Officers arrived to find that the front glass door had been smashed open.

The suspects had already fled with the property they were seeking. According to Mark Trudell, owner of The Walkerville Optical, the thieves were in the store for about 90 seconds, and made off with merchandise worth $40,000. The incident remains under investigation. Anyone with information is encouraged to contact the Property Crimes Unit at 519-2556700, ext. 4350.
