Information sought after cat found nearly frozen
The local humane society is investigating a potential case of animal neglect after a pet cat was found nearly frozen to death on a rural road in Essex. According to the Windsor/ Essex County Humane Society, when the female cat was brought to a veterinarian, her body temperature was so low it would not even register on a thermometer. Only intensive veterinary treatment prevented the cat from dying.
The humane society believes the cat had a few hours to live if
Her body was so cold it was shutting down her organs and she was convulsing.
she did not receive help. “Her body was so cold, it was shutting down her organs, and she was convulsing,” the humane society stated.
A member of the public called the humane society about the cat on Wednesday. An OSPCA officer attended and discovered the cat on Trembley Side Road. Examiners believe the large orange-and-white feline is four years old. Indications that she was someone’s pet include her chubbiness — 18 pounds — and the fact she has been spayed and declawed.
The humane society said the cat had signs of ongoing neglect, such as tightly matted fur with urine and cat litter trapped against the skin, and necrotic flesh on her underside.
The cat’s rescuers have nicknamed her Elsa. Veterinarians are “guardedly optimistic” she will make a full recovery, the humane society said.
Anyone with information about this cat or its past owner is encouraged to call the humane society’s cruelty investigations department at 519-966-5751, ext. 16. Anonymous tips can be made via Crime Stoppers at 519-258-8477 or www.catchcrooks.com.
