Windsor Express on a roll

A move to the city proved successful for three local hockey teams at the Outdoor Shinny Series at Lanspeary Park.

On Saturday, the Amherstbur­g Admirals beat the Wallacebur­g Lakers 5-0 while the Wheatley Sharks dropped the Blenheim Blades 5-2 in the final two games of the series, which featured Bill Stobbs Division teams in the Provincial Junior Hockey League. Lakeshore won the first game of the series 5-0 over Petrolia Friday. Ben Larder and Jared Ratko combined to make 18 saves to share the shutout in the win for the Admirals (23-8-0-3). Broden Meloche had two goals with Josh Talerico, Bryce McGregor and Caleb Paquette adding single goals against the Lakers (1-30-0-2). Alixe Saliba had two goals and three points for the Sharks (1418-0-2) while Mason Gow, Delaney MacDonald and Ernie Godden added single goals against the Blades (16-18-2-0).

The first-place Essex 73’s didn’t play in the series, but scored a 5-2 road win over the Mooretown Flags on Saturday. Tyler Beneteau, Riley Meyerink, Adam Galarin, William Stadder and Curtis Jackson scores single goals for Essex (28-5-0-3) against Mooretown (16-15-1-4).

EXPRESS ROLLING

The Windsor Express are rolling with the club’s third-straight win and sixth in the last seven games, getting the team to .500 for the first time this season.

In a back-and-forth NBL of Canada match, the Express emerged with a 122-119 overtime win over the London Lightning on Saturday at the WFCU Centre before a crowd of 1,208 for the team’s project support initiative. Tyrrel Tate and Ryan Anderson each finished with 21 points to lead the Express (8-8) against the Lightning (8-11). DeAndre Thomas added 20 points, Juan Pattillo finished with 19 points and Horace Wormely chipped in with 14 points while Ty Walker came off the bench to score 10 points.

LANCERS BASKETBALL

The University of Windsor Lancers women’s basketball team handed the Lakehead Thunderwol­ves just its second loss in 14 OUA women’s basketball games this season with a 72-58 win on Saturday. The men’s team ended a four-game losing skid with an 8078 win over Lakehead in Thunder Bay on Saturday.

For the women, who have won four of their last five games, Eve Uwayesu led the Lancers (8-6) with 17 points while Kayah Clarke had 12 points, Samantha Gucciardi finished with 11 and Tyra Blizzard added 10 against the Thunderwol­ves (12-2).

For the men, freshman Thomas Kennedy’s hook shot fell with two seconds to play to give the Lancers the two-point victory. Telloy Simon topped the offence for Windsor (4-10) with 17 points while Kennedy and Lucas Orlita finished with 16 points each against the Thunderwol­ves (3-11).

LANCERS HOCKEY

The Lakehead Thunderwol­ves scored two goals in the third period to grab a 2-1 win over the University of Windsor Lancers Saturday in OUA men’s hockey at South Windsor Arena. The women’s team fell 4-1 to the Nipissing Lakers. For the men, Josh Slegers gave the Lancers (10-10-0-0) a 1-0 lead after two while goalie Jonathan Reinhart made 34 saves against the Thunderwol­ves (10-9-1-1). For the women, Emma Welburn gave Windsor (0-13-2-1) a 1-0 lead, but two power-play goals by the Lakers (7-4-5-1) allowed the visitors to rally for the win.

SAINTS BASKETBALL

The St. Clair Saints men’s and women’s basketball teams each dropped a pair of OCAA games at home on the weekend. For the men, David Gomez Jr. and Jalen Sykes had 28 points each on Sunday in a 104-95 loss to the Sheridan Bruins at the SportsPlex. On Saturday, Gomez Jr. had 25 points in a 96-86 loss to the unbeaten Humber Hawks.

Jana Kucera had 30 points and Keirsten Tomkins finished with 24 in a 79-68 loss to Sheridan Sunday. Kucera had 26 points and Anna Ulicny finished with 18 points in an 84-66 loss to Humber on Saturday.
