Nearly frozen cat recovering: Humane Society

Elsa — the pet cat who was found in a nearly frozen state in Essex last week — is recovering, says the Windsor/Essex County Humane Society.

With the help of veterinary care, the female feline stabilized her condition enough to temporarily move into the home of a member of the humane society ’s medical staff. According to the humane society, the cat still has a lot of recovering to do, and will need to undergo more procedures to remove necrotic skin.

(Elsa is more comfortable) and starting to show her personality.

But for now, Elsa is more comfortable — “and starting to show her personality,” the humane society said. Meanwhile, answers are still being sought about Elsa’s origins. Her name is a nickname bestowed by the humane society: It’s not known what her previous owner named her.

Acting on a tip from a member of the public, an OPSCA officer found the orange and white cat sitting by the side of Trembley Side Road on Jan. 9.

Along with suffering greatly from the cold, the cat was suffering from neglect: Her hair was so matted that it had trapped urine and cat litter to her skin, which was going necrotic on her underside. The cat’s weight — 18 pounds — and the fact that she has been spayed and declawed indicate that she belonged to someone recently. Examiners believe she is four years old. The humane society is continuing to investigate Elsa as a potential case of pet abuse. Anyone with information about this cat or its past owner is encouraged to call 519-966-5751 ext. 16.
