BULLDOGS’ RUN ENDS AT OFSAA VOLLEYBALL

Ottawa-based Franco-Cite sends host General Amherst to sidelines in four games

The host General Amherst Bulldogs’ run at the OFSAA girls’ AA volleyball championsh­ip came to an end on Tuesday in the quarter-finals.

The No. 6-ranked Bulldogs fell 3-1 in a tight quarter-final match to the No. 3-ranked Ottawa Franco-Cite Falcons by scores of 25-23, 20-25, 25-17 and 25-22. Earlier Tuesday, General Amherst finished second in its pool to advance to the quarter-finals after a 2-0 win over No. 20 Kapuskasin­g Cite des Jeunes by scores of 25-10 and 24-10. That left the team second in its pool with a 3-1 record.

The No. 15-ranked Essex Red Raiders, who lost both games on Monday, split a pair of games to close out pool play on Tuesday, but failed to advance to quarter-final play.

Essex beat No. 18 Toronto Bishop Marocco/Thomas Merton 2-0 by scores of 25-10 and 25-13, but fell 2-1 to No. 12 Thornhill Thornlea by scores of 16-25, 25-21 and 15-12 as the team finished fourth in its pool.

OFSAA SWIMMING

Area athletes picked up six medals on Tuesday as the OFSAA swimming championsh­ips got underway at the Pan Am Sports Centre in Toronto. Villanova’s Luca Chiandussi grabbed the area’s lone gold medal of the day by winning the open boys’ 100-metre breaststro­ke in 1:02.67.

Vista Academy’s Zoe Tiplady, Marjorie Sloboda, Madelyn Gatrall and Julia Marcuzzi took a silver medal in the open girls’ 200-metre medley relay in 2:01.5. Gatrall also won a silver medal in the open girls’ 100-metre backstroke in 1:01.52 while Riverside’s Lily Pattinson also earned a silver in the girls’ 14-and-under 50-metre backstroke in 36.60.

St. Anne’s Bradley Murphy won bronze in the boys’ 14-and-under 50-metre freestyle in 26.32 while Belle River’s Emily Bryant won bronze in the para 50-metre backstroke in 47.59.

CLIPPERS ADVANCE

The No. 1-ranked Kennedy Clippers are into the medal round at the OFSAA boys’ AA basketball championsh­ip in Timmins. Kennedy advanced to the semifinals with a 55-43 win over No. 8-ranked Kingston Frontenac Falcons in quarter-final play. Akot Aken led Kennedy with 12 points. D.J. Simonato finished with 11 and Ardell Scott-Jackson and Andrew Loyuk each finished with 10 points.

Earlier in the day, Kennedy advanced to the quarter-finals with an 83-36 win over No. 17-ranked Sudbury Lo-Ellen. Gatluak James had 14 points to lead the Clippers. Simonato had 13 while Scott-Jackson and Mazin Tiea each had 12 while Aken finished with 11.

KNIGHTS OUSTED

The Holy Names Knights’ hopes for a medal were dashed on Tuesday at OFSAA boys’ AAA basketball championsh­ip in Stoney Creek.

After falling to the No. 1-ranked team in Monday’s opener, the No. 11-ranked Knights were bounced from the championsh­ip side of the tournament after an 85-58 loss to the host Saltfleet team, which is ranked No. 6. Galdo Tutu led the Knights with 24 points while Rodi Mazloum finished with 12.

WILDCATS STOPPED

The Villanova Wildcats split a pair of games on Tuesday, but failed to advance from pool play at the OFSAA girls’ AAA volleyball championsh­ip in Burlington. The No. 17-ranked Wildcats, who lost both pool games on Monday, opened play on Tuesday with a 2-0 win over No. 13 North York Havergal by scores of 25-15 and 25-9.

However, the Wildcats fell 2-1 to No. 7 Scarboroug­h Sir Oliver Mowat by scores of 25-22, 16-25 and 15-13 to finish fourth in its pool.

ROYALS SPLIT

The No. 14-ranked Lajeunesse Royals made it to the quarter-finals at the OFSAA girls’ A volleyball championsh­ip in Kenora on Tuesday.

Lajeunesse beat No. 9 Durham Christian 2-0 by scores of 25-9 and 25-19 to finish second it its pool with a 2-1 record. However, the Royals drew No. 1-ranked Hamilton ESAC Mere-Teresa and dropped the quarter-final match 3-0 by scores 25-10, 25-17 and 25-11.
