Discoloured water not harmful: Enwin
A routine flushing of the water system starts April 29, when residents in targeted areas may notice mild discoloration and sedimentation in water coming from their taps. Enwin is assuring customers it’s not harmful and should clear up after running the water for several minutes, but it is cautioning that laundry could be damaged. It is also advising people to fill up some containers prior to the flushing and to not run any hot water taps during the flushing.
The flushing is necessary to make sure fire hydrants in the city have a safe level of water pressure, Enwin says in a news release. The flushing will be done between 8 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. in various areas of the city. The first area — to be flushed between Monday and June 7 — is bounded by Tecumseh Rd. to the north, Division Rd. to the South, Howard Ave.to the west and Riberdy Ave. to the east. An advertisement will appear every Saturday in the Windsor Star advising where Enwin staff will be working. The program runs to Oct. 4. When the flushing is happening in your area, Enwin recommends to: fill up some containers with water in advance, to use while the work’s being done; avoid doing laundry until the work is finished in the afternoon; avoid running hot water taps, “as some discoloured water and sediment may be drawn into your hot water heater;” and run cold water through your interior faucets once flushing is finished, until the discoloured water is replaced by clear water.
If the discoloration doesn’t go away after flushing is completed, call Enwin at 519-255-2727. For daily information about where the flushing is happening, follow Enwin’s Twitter feed, or view Enwin’s Hydrant System Flushing Map.
