Gateway Casinos preparing to fill 200 jobs in Chatham

- ELLWOOD SHREVE

Gateway Casinos will soon begin filling the 200 positions needed before opening its new casino in Chatham this summer. A job fair is being held on May 1 from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. at the John D. Bradley Convention Centre, next to where the $36-million casino is being built on Richmond Street in Chatham.

Rob Mitchell, Gateway’s director of communications and public affairs, offered this advice: “Come with a positive attitude because it’s going to be a long day, and bring your resume.”

He said Gateway Casinos has already received a lot of interest in the jobs, adding well over 1,000 applicants are expected. He said there has even been interest shown by current Caesars Windsor casino workers.

“We hope to meet with as many folks as possible,” Mitchell said. “We certainly don’t want to turn anybody away.

“We’re quite excited about (the job fair), as we’re quite excited about coming to Chatham.” Mitchell said the positions Gateway Casinos needs to fill in Chatham include dealers, guest services representatives, auditors, cage and coin cashiers and security staff.

He said staff will also be needed for the two restaurants that will be part of the casino — the MATCH Eatery & Public House, which is a sports bar, and The Buffet. The new casino will feature 333 slot machines and 12 gaming tables. Mitchell said Gateway Casinos provides training for people who apply to work as dealers. There was an extensive training session held at Casino Rama in Orillia to prepare for the opening of 26 gaming tables at Gateway Casinos Innisfil, near Barrie, he said. He added there’s a lot of etiquette required when working as a dealer with respect to handling cards and money. “There’s a very extensive training component to the table games component,” Mitchell said. While there will be both fulltime and part-time positions available at the new casino in the future, “initially, we’re really looking to staff up full time,” Mitchell said.

We hope to meet with as many folks as possible. We certainly don’t want to turn anybody away.
