Windsor Fire raises fun level at parks

Summer events begin next week

- JENNIFER LA GRASSA

Windsor Fire knows how to keep things cool for the summer.

The third annual Hot Summer Nights Fun Blast, hosted by Windsor Fire & Rescue Services, will take place every Thursday evening starting and running until Aug. 29.

Each week, the event will take place at a different park throughout Windsor’s 10 wards. There will be hands-on activities for kids, the chance for them to explore fire trucks, and a visit from Windsor Fire mascot, Sparky the dog.

For those especially hot evenings, there will also be a cool soaking from fire truck sprinklers.

Hot Summer Nights Fun Blast, which includes free water and hotdogs, also allows community members to get to know their local firefighting team and learn life-saving tips.

According to Windsor fire officials, about 150 Ontarians die in fires each year, and more than half of fatal home fires start while people are asleep. Knowing ways to remain safe during a fire, having a planned escape route and working fire detectors are all keys to being prepared in case of an emergency.

This year’s community partners are BELFOR, Dowler-karn, Culligan, Steimar, Farron’s, Food Basics, Superstore and the Mcdonald’s at Goyeau and Wyandotte streets.

The first event was originally scheduled for this past Thursday, but was rescheduled due to the weather.

Food and drinks are provided on a first-come, first-serve basis. The event is not rain or shine, but Windsor Fire (@Windsorfire1) will tweet out updates should an event be cancelled.
