Highway 3 was closed in both directions between Victoria Avenue and Maidstone Avenue West (County Road 8) for a good part of Friday following a head-on collision.

The crash happened shortly before noon in front of Country Meadows Cemetery. Witnesses at the scene told the Star a 20-yearold female driver and a passenger were injured, and one male driver fled the scene on foot.

“The gentleman in this van went to try and pass or something and hit her head-on,” said witness Victoria Mouck, a recently retired registered nurse. Mouck pulled over to help the female driver, who she said remained inside her dark sedan with injuries until emergency crews arrived. “She (the driver) was just coming from writing an exam in Windsor.”

The male driver walked away from the scene, Mouck said.

“He took off up the road. One of the women that was helping (at the crash scene) took off after him to see if she could stop him, but somebody picked him up, so I have no idea where he went.”

Mouck said she offered medical assistance to the man, he told her he was OK and fled on foot. The man did not approach the other vehicle, Mouck said.

OPP technical collision investigators attended the scene. Police were looking for the male driver, and are asking for witnesses to contact the OPP.

Two people were sent to hospital, one with life-threatening injuries, according to OPP Const. Jim Root.

“I don’t have the specifics on who’s even at fault at this point,” Root said hours after the collision. “Obviously, it was a head-on collision, so somebody was in the wrong lane. We’ll leave that up to our technical collision investigators to determine.”

“I know that (the male driver) did not remain at the scene to assist with the investigation.”

The silver minivan was westbound, and the sedan was eastbound, Root said.

Anyone with information about the collision, or the location of the male driver is asked to contact the OPP at 1-888-310-1122, or Crime Stoppers anonymously at 1-800222-8477 (TIPS) or catchcrooks.com.
