Bounty for arrest of ‘porch pirates’

Residents urged to take steps to prevent porch piracy, lock cars while shopping

- DALSON CHEN

Like it or not, the season for giving is also the season for shopping — and that means theft opportunities for criminals who don’t care if they ruin your Christmas.

That’s why Windsor and Essex County Crime Stoppers have put a bounty on “porch pirates.” For the rest of December, the organization is offering a $250 award for any tip that leads to identification of suspects who steal delivered packages.

Online shopping may be more popular than ever, but it has certain vulnerabilities that require their own kind of awareness.

Want to prevent porch piracy? Consider having your package delivered to your post office for pick up. The extra security may be worth the inconvenience.

Or consider having your package delivered to an address where you know someone will be present to receive it — such as your workplace, a friend’s residence or a relative.

Keep in mind that some sellers offer a “ship to store” option, and some shipping services offer a delivery option that requires signature confirmation.

Whether or not you’re a potential victim of porch piracy, Crime Stoppers remind you of the benefit of reporting suspicious activity in your neighbourhood. Call your local police service to provide information, or contact Crime Stoppers at 519-258-8477 if you wish to submit a tip anonymously.

Perhaps you’re more of a traditional shopper and you prefer to buy gifts from a real store. That doesn’t mean you can relax about theft prevention.

Both Windsor Police Service and Essex County OPP sing the old tune of “lock it or lose it.” Always secure your vehicle and don’t keep valuables inside them.

If you must leave your vehicle unattended with items inside, don’t leave those items in plain sight. Put all packages and bags in the trunk. Don’t tempt criminals by presenting a target.

Holiday season or not, thieves are always going to exist in the world — but that doesn’t mean you have to make it easy for them.
