ARMED STANDOFF
Heavily armed Windsor police officers take up positions at the scene of a standoff in the 400 block of Bruce Avenue on Wednesday. A man later surrendered.
An nearly 12-hour standoff in the 400 block of Bruce Avenue ended at approximately 5:30 p.m. Wednesday when a male suspect exited a multi-unit apartment building and was arrested without incident.
Windsor police officers had surrounded the residence in the 400 block of Bruce Avenue in response to an alleged assault possibly involving weapons on Wednesday morning.
Around 6:50 a.m., patrol officers responded to a report of a stabbing. An injured man was found in the 500 block of University Avenue West. He was taken to hospital for treatment and assessment of his wounds.
Police then learned that the incident involved a multi-unit dwelling on Bruce Avenue — and that there may be a gun at the residence.
Windsor police converged on the address, including members of the Windsor police tactical team (emergency services unit).
Officers could be seen pointing their C8 carbines at the building from behind cover.
An adult male suspect was identified, as well as a specific unit in the building. All other occupants were safely evacuated.
Around 10:30 a.m., Windsor police managed to contact the suspect via phone.
Negotiations continued throughout the day leading to the successful ending of the standoff.
The streets in the area — centered on Bruce Avenue just south of Park Street and north of Wyandotte Street West — had been closed off to the public but were to open again in the early evening.
