General Amherst girls advance to volleyball medal round at OFSAA

Medal hopes came to an end for the Herman Green Griffins and Riverside Rebels on Tuesday at the OFSAA boys’ AA basketball championsh­ip.

The No. 8-seeded Herman Green Griffins built an early 10-point lead against the No. 1-ranked Kingston Frontenac Falcons in quarter-final play, but could not hold on and eventually fell 64-59.

Meanwhile, after jumping to early leads in winning its first two games, the host and No. 12-ranked Riverside Rebels fell behind by double digits in the first quarter and could not rally in a 74-51 quarter-final loss to the No. 2-ranked Toronto Crescent Coyotes.

For the Green Griffins, guard Desmond Freeman-price had 18 points to lead the offence while forward Cody Briggs finished with nine points for Herman, which entered the fourth quarter tied at 42-42.

Riverside, which upset No. 7-ranked Sudbury Lasalle to reach the quarter-finals, got 25 points from Aboudi Hajazi in the loss to the Coyotes.

AA VOLLEYBALL

The No. 3-ranked General Amherst Bulldogs moved into the medal round at the OFSAA girls’ AA volleyball championsh­ip in Kingsville with a three-game sweep of the No. 6-ranked Dundas Valley Gryphons in quarter-final play on Tuesday.

General Amherst took the match 25-23, 25-10 and 25-17 to advance to Wednesday’s semifinal where a win over No. 2 Streetsvil­le would put the Bulldogs into the gold-medal game.

Earlier on Tuesday, General Amherst closed out pool play with a 2-1 win over No. 9 Etobicoke Silverthor­n by scores of 27-25, 15-25 and 15-6 to finish first in its pool.

The host and No. 15-ranked Kingsville Cavaliers split two matches on Tuesday to finish fourth in its pool, but failed to advance to quarter-final play.

Kingsville beat No. 18 Fenelon Falls 2-0 by scores of 25-22 and 2518 before finishing up tournament play with a tight 2-0 loss to No. 12 Sudbury Lo-ellen by scores of 2521

and 25-22.

AAA BASKETBALL

The No. 2-ranked Kennedy Clippers moved into the medal round at the OFSAA boys’ AAA basketball tournament in Burlington on Tuesday.

After rolling to a 100-50 win over the No. 15 Oakville Garth Webb Chargers earlier in the day, the Clippers advanced to the medal round with a 49-39 win over the No. 7-ranked Toronto Oakwood Barons in quarter-final play.

Against Garth Webb, Andrew Loyuk and Kyle Fazkas both finished with 16 points. Mazin Tiea had 14 points and Ardell Scott-jackson and Mufta Ageli added 12 points each.

In the quarter-final match with Oakwood, Loyuk scored 18 points to lead the offence and Fazakas finished with 16 points.

Kennedy will now face the No. 3-ranked Kitchener Eastwood Barons in semifinal play on Wednesday with the winner playing for gold and the losing headed to the bronze-medal game.

A VOLLEYBALL

Medal hopes came to an end for the No. 4-ranked Lajeunesse Royals in the quarter-final at the OFSAA girls’ A volleyball championsh­ip on Tuesday.

The Royals fell in four sets to No. 5 Toronto District Christian by scores of 25-17, 21-25, 25-16 and 25-23.

Earlier in the day, Lajeunesse lost its final pool game to No. 10 Gloucester Louis-riel by scores of 25-21, 23-25 and 15-12. However, by winning one set the Royals had seven set wins in pool play to clinch the top spot.

A BASKETBALL

The No. 10-ranked Lajeunesse Royals were eliminated from medal contention on Tuesday at the OFSAA boys’ A basketball championsh­ip in North Bay.

The young Lajeunesse squad fell 78-63 to No. 5-ranked Sault Ste. Marie White Pines. Kamal Allicock had 17 points for the Royals and Bora Kabano finished with 13 points.
