Tecumseh runner headed to Olympics

- JIM PARKER

Tecumseh native Dayna Pidhoresky qualified for a spot on the Canadian Olympic team back in October with her performance at the Canadian marathon championships.

While the Olympic Games have been delayed a year, the 33-yearold Pidhoresky’s spot is now secure as Athletics Canada has made her nomination for a marathon spot official.

“We knew the selection meeting was taking place the first week of May,” said Pidhoresky, who is a Maranatha Christian Academy product and University of Windsor grad. “It’s a great feeling to have that box checked.”

Pidhoresky’s time of two hours and 29.03 minutes in winning the Canadian women’s championship was a personal best and the fifth-fastest time for a female Canadian marathoner ever. It also met the Olympic qualifying standard of 2:29.30.

“Of course we assumed that would happen due to the trials format they had in place,” Pidhoresky, who now lives in Vancouver, said of her selection. “I knew I had met the standard fully, but nonetheless it’s still a relief to have that done. Now I am able to focus solely on being the best I can be next August at the Olympics.”

Athletics Canada also confirmed Trevor Hofbauer in men’s marathon along with race walker Evan Dunfee for the Tokyo Olympic Games, which will be held July 23 to Aug. 5, 2021.

USHL DRAFT

Tecumseh’s Marcus Joughin and Belle River’s Brendan Kennette were selected in Phase 2 of the United States Hockey League draft, which is for players eligible to play junior and not on a team roster for that league.

A former member of the Sun County Panthers minor midgets, the 18-year-old Joughin was taken in the eighth round by the Youngstown Phantoms. A 5-foot10, 161-pound forward, he played prep hockey in 2019-20 with the New Hampton School Huskies in New Hampshire and had 16 goals and 79 points in 35 games.

Joughin is set to play for the West Kelowna Warriors in the British Columbia Hockey League next season before heading to Sacred Heart University in Fairfield, Conn., in 2021-22.

Kennette was selected by the Muskegon Lumberjacks in the 16th round of the draft. A 17-yearold defenceman, Kennette has played for Sun County and the Windsor Jr. Spitfires as well as the junior B Sarnia Legionnaires.

The 6-foot-1, 190-pound Kennette had five goals and 24 points in 45 games in 2019-20 with the Ontario Junior Hockey League’s Burlington Cougars. Like Joughin, Kennette is headed to Sacred Heart University in 2021-22.

SIDDALL TOURNAMENT

The Windsor Stars have had to cancel this year’s sixth annual Kevin Siddall Invitational Baseball Tournament due to the COVID -19 pandemic.

The event was set for June 12-14 at Mic Mac Park and had drawn 34 teams from 22 organizations in rookie minor, rookie major and bantam major.

In previous years, the event has raised $64,000 for charities like Ronald Mcdonald House, Childcan and We Care for Kids.
