Masse, postal workers' union call for greener Canada Post
Local MP Brian Masse (NDP — Windsor West) and the Canadian Union of Postal Workers are calling on the federal government to support making Canada Post more environmentally friendly.
According to Masse and CUPW, Canada Post's “strategic locations across the country” could help in efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
CUPW national president Jan Simpson suggested converting Canada Post's vehicle fleet to fully electric as one idea to help tackle climate change.
Adding his voice to a statement released Friday, Windsor Ward 9 Coun. Kieran Mckenzie said the Windsor-essex region would benefit from such a plan.
“The City of Windsor's economic development strategy, as articulated through Windsor Works, makes the strong argument that the future of automotive manufacturing in our region is connected to Windsor-essex developing manufacturing capacity in that electrical vehicle space,” he said.
Pointing to Earth Day celebrated on Thursday, Masse said the New Democrat Party welcomes such a transformative initiative.
“Canada needs to take real action by moving forward to create good jobs by transitioning to a clean economy, while protecting our land, water, and air for future generations,” Masse said in a release.
“By choosing vehicles manufactured in Canada, this transition would have a significant economic impact on the Canadian automotive and manufacturing industry.”
