With more COVID-19 vaccine doses available than arms to put them in, the Windsor-essex County Health Unit has announced walk-in availability and same-day appointments at all five area mass vaccination clinics.

The change is being made “in order to support residents to quickly and easily be immunized,” said a news release from the health unit on Wednesday.

“Windsor and Essex County have been leaders in the province in the distribution of vaccines since they became widely available in March of this year,” the health unit said.

“The progress made to date has been immense and the reduction of cases is a result of the mass vaccination effort, targeted outreach by community partners, and continued adherence to public health measures by the community. However, as vaccination rates plateau, the threat of COVID-19 variants increases.”

First and second doses of both the Moderna and Pfizer-biontech jabs are available to anyone age 12 and up at:

the Libro Credit Union Centre (3295 Meloche Rd.) in Amherstburg;

Nature Fresh Farms Recreation Centre (249 Sherk St.) in Leamington;

in Windsor at the WFCU Centre (8787 Mchugh St.);

the former Sears building at Devonshire Mall (3100 Howard Ave.);

and Moy Medical Centre (1407 Ottawa St.).

Select pharmacies and primary care provider offices are also offering vaccines by appointment only.

Additionally, mobile clinics in neighbourhoods with low vaccine coverage have been organized over the next two weeks. The schedule for the clinics is updated regularly online at wevax.ca. All mobile clinics operate from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Mobile clinics will operate on Thursday at Centennial Central Public School (6420 Taylor Ave.) in Comber and on Friday at Assumption College Catholic High School (1100 Huron Church Rd.) in Windsor.
