Tecumseh to test public transit on demand

In a first for the area, Tecumseh is launching a one-year pilot project to test on-demand public transit.

Using computer algorithms in response to service requests, an on-demand system allows a bus to develop its own routing instead of having to follow a preplanned route and schedule. It means the bus goes directly to where and when people are waiting.

people, provide enhanced service and extend bus service into areas not previously serviced, he said. The requests for service are made through a smartphone app and handled almost instantane­ously. A phone-in request option will also be available for those without smartphone access.

To assist the municipali­ty with the pilot, local MP Irek Kusmierczy­k announced on Friday $27,150 in federal funding.

The service is expected to be launched later in the fall and without any impact on fares.
