A new boutique grocery store in the heart of downtown Windsor is now serving customers seven days a week.

La Vern's Market opened its doors Friday, offering fresh fruits and vegetables, prepared meals and a select supply of dry goods.

Owner Vern Myslichuk has also brought in refrigerated and frozen items along with freshly baked bread.

The 2,600-square-foot grocery store, located on the ground floor of the Security Building at University Avenue West and Pelissier Street, also features locally produced honey and products from Tecumseh's Dressed by an Olive.

The darkly painted interior is accented by a hand-painted lemon tree that spreads out over the ceiling.

Myslichuk, who also owns Better Made Cabinets and has renovated the Low-martin House in Walkerville, bought the building in May 2020.

He told the Star previously he planned to renovate the upper floors for apartments.

Brian Yeomans, chairman of the Downtown Windsor Business Improvement Association, said he's “thrilled” to see the new business open.

Yeomans said the grocery store is a great addition for the growing number of residents who are living in the downtown.

“I've lived downtown for quite a few years, but I've also worked downtown for 29 years,” Yeomans said.

A Food Basics grocery store located on Goyeau Street is convenient for those who can drive, but Yeomans said it's “a distance” from the actual core of the city's downtown.

“I don't want to have to get in my car to go grocery shopping,” he said, adding that he lives half a block from La Vern's. I love driving, but I don't want to have to drive. I want to drive when I want to.

“So when I want to get my groceries and I can just go downstairs, that's golden.”

La Vern's Market is open seven days a week, from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m.
