Spellman was an excellent teacher

Thank you for the obituary on Dr. John Spellman as he was a true environmental hero.

One of my favourite statements by Dr. Spellman was during one hearing involving a municipal council and their hired hands when he stated loudly: “Shame on those who have no shame.”

When many people heard of the pending destruction of yet another mature mixed deciduous forest, people took time away from their families, businesses and other commitments.

There were teachers, doctors, farmers, factory workers and biologists. There was much knowledge and ability, but a lack of collective knowledge and experience.

Dr. Spellman took on the task to uphold justice. With his unwavering determination and outstanding abilities, he was successful in helping stop illegal actions for the conservation of an environmental treasure.

In that setting several years ago, citizens watched their tax dollars being used against their efforts. Municipal representatives, staffers and hires for both the municipality and the developer, seemingly attempted to undermine our laws.

Was there no shame for the potentially destructive consequences that created division among community members and harm to the environment?
