Additional charges have been laid against a local coach and mentor in the sporting community who last month was charged with sexual assaults in connection with two complainants, Windsor police said Tuesday.

Two new complainants came forward following reports of the initial sexual assault charges in early April against Michael Hampden-carter, also known as Michael Carter.

Investigators said they believe there is the potential of more alleged victims in the community.

Windsor police said a young woman came forward on April 5, the day after the first charges against Carter were reported, and recounted an alleged incident in February 2019 when Carter was working in his capacity as a mentor and coach in the local sports community.

A week later, police said a fourth young person came forward and recounted two alleged incidents between November 2021 and March 2022, when Carter reportedly worked as a mentor in a school program in which the complainant was enrolled.

Police arrested Carter for a second time on April 14 and charged him with additional offences. He now faces a total of seven sexual assault-related charges: four counts of sexual assault and three counts of sexual exploitation.

No further information will be released to protect the identity of the alleged victims, police said Tuesday.

The department's major crime unit began an investigation after two complainants came forward in March and recounted alleged sexual assaults from January 2022. At the time, police noted Carter had been employed with the Greater Essex County District School Board at the time of the alleged incidents.

References to Carter have been removed from the school board's website — though a record from a school counsellor program describes him as a former CFL player, a former probation and parole officer, youth adviser and coach for young athletes. Police said Carter had involvement at several local schools.

On Tuesday, a school board spokesperson declined to comment on the new charges against Carter and said any further information would come from Windsor police, although he said Carter is no longer employed by the board.

A Canadian business registry describes Carter as a director of a non-profit Tecumseh-based football organization called BTG Football.
