One more person in Windsor and Essex County has died of COVID-19 in the last two days, health officials reported Thursday, even as case counts in the region have declined over the last week.

A man in his 90s living in the community is the region's 620th Covid-19-related death, the Windsor-essex County Health Unit said Thursday.

There have been 80 reported new high-risk cases in the community since the last COVID -19 update on Tuesday: 39 and 41 cases respectively reported May 11 and 12.

Between new cases and people who are recovering from the virus, there are now 150 ongoing highrisk COVID -19 cases in the region, down from 200 on Tuesday and 216 last Thursday.

Health officials note that because of limits on COVID-19 testing, only high-risk cases are included in official case tallies and these numbers undercount the burden of the virus in the community.

Thirty-two people are in hospital with COVID-19, including one person in intensive care.

There are 17 outbreaks of COVID-19 in the community, 12 of which are in long-term care or retirement homes. There are five outbreaks of COVID-19 in the community.

Vaccination numbers have remained steady in the Windsor and Essex County region over the last several weeks. About 84 per cent of residents age five or older have received two doses of COVID-19 vaccine, while about 52 per cent of residents aged 12 or older have received a third booster dose.

Currently only adults 60 or older, as well as immune-compromised people and Indigenous adults, are eligible for a fourth dose of COVID-19 vaccine. The health unit has distributed more than 23,000 fourth doses to date.
