Despite two years away from the sport, the Sandwich Sabres track and field team has not lost a step.

Last week, the Sabres won all six divisions and claimed their 11th consecutive WECSSAA track and field title.

Sandwich returned to action for the two-day SWOSSAA track and field meet and again swept all six age divisions.

“Never swept all the age divisions in WECSSAA and SWOSSAA,” Sabres head coach Rob Moore said. “When the kids first came out, we didn’t know what to expect.

“A lot of these kids haven’t had sports for two years and a lot didn’t know how high school sports worked. But with such a great (16-member) coaching staff, the kids got a little more attention and I think that really helped build the program back up.”

Along with sweeping all six divisions, Sandwich also reclaimed the SWOSSAA overall title, which it had lost in 2019 to Sarnia Northern after the Sabres had won seven-straight titles from 2012-18.

COLQUHOUN RETIRES

The CFL’S Toronto Argonauts placed Windsor native Arjen Colquhoun on the retired list on Friday.

The 29-year-old Colquhoun, a Herman high school product, played cornerback at Michigan State University and attended training camp with the NFL’S Dallas Cowboys before heading to the CFL.

A second-round pick of Edmonton in 2017, the six-foot, 190-pound Colquhoun played three seasons in Edmonton before joining the Argonauts in 2020, but injuries limited him to five tackles in seven games in his final season. In 31 career games, Colquhoun had 52 defensive tackles, five special teams tackles and two interceptions.

MCBRIDE STARTS QUICKLY

In his first competition of the season, Windsor’s Brandon Mcbride won the men’s 800 metres at the USATF Distance Classic at Mt. San Antonio College in Walnut, Calif.

A two-time Canadian Olympian, the 27-year-old Mcbride, who is the Canadian record holder in the event, sat in fifth place after the opening lap, but opened it up to win the race in one minute 47.39 seconds as he held off American Brannon Kidder, who finished in second in 1:47.64.

KASCHALK LEAVES MARK

Windsor’s Patrick Kaschalk was named Great Lakes Valley Conference lacrosse player of the year.

The 23-year-old Kaschalk, who was a transfer from Stony Brook University, also set new school records for the Lindenwood University Lions with 62 goals and 78 points in 14 games, which broke the marks of 40 goals set by Carter Collins in 2021 and Kevin Eskridge’s 54 points set in 2015.

HILL TOP STUDENT

University of Detroit Mercy senior men’s golfer James Hill has been named Academic All-league for the second year in a row by the Horizon League.

An Assumption high school product, Hill, who is majoring in finance, carried a 3.93 grade-point average while leading the team with a stroke average of 74, which put him in the school’s all-time top 10 in that category.

He had five top-20 finishes, three top-10 finishes and one victory in the eight events he started this past season.
