Motorist charged with stunt driving for third time

- DALSON CHEN

Windsor police have pointed out a particularly egregious example of a local driver whose behaviour behind the wheel has resulted in repeated charges.

According to the Traffic Enforcement Unit, the same person has been subject to a stunt driving charge in three separate incidents over the past three months: Once in March, and twice in May.

The first case was on March 18 when the driver was stopped in a Dodge Challenger that was observed reaching a speed of 152 km/h in a 50 km/h zone — more than triple the posted limit.

That incident resulted in a stunt driving charge, a 30-day licence suspension, and the car being impounded for 14 days.

But on May 21 — this past weekend — the same driver was once again found in a Dodge Challenger that was seen doing “doughnuts” in a parking lot.

According to Windsor police, the muscle car was intentionally being driven in a manner so that its tires would lose traction and spin on the paved surface.

That scene warranted another stunt driving charge.

The next day — on Monday, May 22 — an officer caught a Dodge minivan travelling at a speed of 115 km/h in a 60 km/h.

In the driver seat of the minivan was the individual from the previous two incidents.

According to Windsor police, the three consecutive stunt driving charges could result in penalties that include up to $37,500 in fines, 1.5 years in jail, and a lifetime ban on driving.

Last week was officially Canada Road Safety Week, with police services across the country campaigning for safer driving habits.

OPP West Region said their detachments laid more than 2,600 charges related to driving from May 16 to 22.

Of those charges, 1,552 were due to speeding offences — with 51 of the incidents being severe enough to warrant stunt driving charges.
