Fugitive nabbed during drug investigation

- DALSON CHEN

A man who absconded from justice more than three years ago is in custody again as a result of a Windsor police drug raid.

The arrest subject — Ali Fageer, 28 — was responsible for a homicide in London in 2015, but had been a fugitive since January 2020 when he jumped bail and went into hiding.

In April, the Windsor police drugs and guns unit (DIGS) began investigating a possible case of fentanyl trafficking.

The suspect in the investigation was eventually identified as Fageer.

On Wednesday, members of the province's Repeat Offender Parole Enforcement (ROPE) squad located and arrested Fageer as he was seated in a parked vehicle in the area of Riverside Drive East and Parent Avenue.

A search of the vehicle turned up 331 grams of suspected fentanyl, two digital scales, around $1,000 in cash, and a collapsible baton weapon.

Windsor police estimate the potential street value of the seized substances at $82,000.

The 2015 homicide in London was a shooting that resulted in the death of 36-year-old Mark Mccullagh, who was at his home taking out some garbage at the time.

Prosecutors say Fageer and two other men approached the address to commit robbery. Fageer drew a handgun and fired in a struggle with the victim.

Fageer eventually pleaded guilty to manslaughter, robbery, and other charges.

However, while on bail awaiting sentencing, Fageer managed to remove his ankle monitor and disappeared.

Insp. David Deluca of Windsor police commended the DIGS unit for “tremendous work” that led to Fageer's arrest this week.

“This case is a prime example of how our members are working diligently to keep our community safe from the harms of the illicit drug trade,” Deluca said in a release.
