- JIM PARKER

The Villanova Wildcats, L'essor Aigles and Lajeunesse Royals all emerged with WECSSAA senior boys' soccer championships.

Peter Tsouralis scored the game-winning goal as the Wildcats claimed the AAA title with a 2-1 win over the St. Joseph Lasers. Aidan Belcastro had the other Villanova goal, with Steve Oglan scoring for the Lasers.

The Aigles took the AA title with a 3-0 win over the Riverside Stingers. Nico Fontecha, Josh Abidakun and Mateo Nabben scored for L'essor.

The Lajeunesse Royals earned the A title with a 4-1 victory over the Westview Freedom Academy Falcons.

Fabien Ramadhani scored twice for the Royals, with single goals going to Ali Kader and Ciaran O'connor. Mohamed Al Hamod Al Khalaf replied for the Falcons.

WECSSAA GIRLS' SOCCER

The Holy Names Knights claimed the WECSSAA senior girls' AAA title with a tight 2-1 win over the Villanova Wildcats. Layla Hutson had the Knights up with the only goal of the opening half. Villanova tied it on a Natalia Digiovanni goal, but Leah Tate answered a minute later and the Knights held on to claim the school's first title since 2013.

Meanwhile, the L'essor Aigles made it back-to-back titles with a 3-1 win over the Vista Academy Vortex.

L'essor scored all three of its goals in the opening half with Alex Smith netting a pair and Elle Beaulieu scoring the other. Maggie Mcgregor scored in the second half for Vista Academy.

The Lajeunesse Royals were awarded the A title as the lone team competing at that level.

SABRES TAKE SWOSSAA

The Sandwich Sabres' track and field team continues to roll.

After dominating the WECSSAA track and field championships a week ago, the Sabres were every bit as impressive in capturing the SWOSSAA overall title.

Sandwich finished with 800.5 points, which was more than double the 342.5 points amassed by second-place Sarnia Northern, with the Holy Names Knights finishing third.

It gave the Sabres back-to-back overall SWOSSAA team titles and the school's ninth in the last 10 championships, with Northern's victory in 2019 the only blemish.

Sandwich also took five of the six divisions by winning novice girls, junior boys and girls and senior boys and girls. Lambton Central beat Sandwich 68.5 points to 67 to take the novice boys' title.

Next up is the OFSAA West Regional, which is set for Friday and Saturday in Cambridge.
