Stellantis needs to keep its word

-

Recent actions taken by Stellantis, one of the corporations responsible for the battery plant's construction in Windsor, can be described as a form of corporate blackmail posing an economic threat to our community and country.

It is disheartening to witness a corporation acting in what I feel is bad faith and disregard for commitments it made to Windsor and Canada.

We must not forget the critical role the Canadian government played in saving Chrysler — the predecessor to Stellantis — during its bankruptcy in 2009. At that crucial moment, the government stepped in and provided a bailout to ensure the company's survival.

It is deeply concerning Stellantis seems to have forgotten all that Windsor and Canada have done for them.

The Nextstar Energy EV battery plant holds immense potential for our community. With its construction underway, promises made by Stellantis regarding module assembly, battery cell production and research and development have instilled hope for a prosperous future for the region.

However, lack of progress in reaching an agreement between Stellantis and Canadian government places this progress at risk.

I wholeheartedly join our community in urging residents, business owners, community leaders and stakeholders to demand resumption of construction and fulfilment of promises made.

Windsor deserves better than being coerced into accepting a scaled-down version of the planned facilities.

Corporations must not be permitted to engage in such detrimental behaviour, as it not only jeopardizes the livelihoods of communities that support them, but also undermines the fabric of our society. It falls upon government to ensure companies act with integrity and fulfil their commitments without resorting to coercive tactics.

We must implore the federal government to collaborate with the United States in putting an end to such practices. Rather than engaging in competition, it is essential our nations work together to prevent companies from holding communities hostage for their own gain.

Allowing this situation to persist will lead to dire future consequences for both Canada and United States.

Let us not tolerate actions by any corporation that seeks to undermine interests of our community and nation. Together we can strive towards securing Windsor's economic future and reaffirm our pivotal role in Canada's electric vehicle revolution.
