Saints teams secure home volleyball playoff spots

The Saints women's and men's teams have earned a home-court game for the OCAA volleyball playoffs.

The women's team swept a pair of weekend games to finish the regular season at 16-2 and earn second place in the West Division.

The Saints beat College Boreal in three sets on Sunday, 25-13, 25-15 and 25-12 and also defeated Cambrian College 3-0 on Saturday, 25-16, 25-18 and 25-16.

The Saints will host La Cite on Saturday at 2 p.m. in a division crossover game with a chance to advance to the quarterfin­als.

The men's team closed out the season on Sunday with a 3-0 win over College Boreal, 25-20, 25-13 and 25-18. That followed a 3-1 setback on Saturday to Cambrian College, where the Saints fell 27-25, 23-25, 25-15 and 25-16.

That put the Saints at 13-5 on the season, which is the most wins in a season in school history. The club, which tied for second in the West Division, will host a playoff game for the first time in the program's history on Saturday against Durham at 4:30 p.m. in a crossover playoff match with the winner moving on to quarterfin­al play.

SAINTS BASKETBALL SWEEP

The St. Clair Saints men's basketball team scored an 84-63 win on Sunday over Niagara after beating Canadore 100-55 on Saturday in OCAA play to improve to 13-3 atop the West Division.

However, the women's team fell 53-52 to Niagara on Sunday to fall to 11-3 and now a game back of first-place Lambton.

The men's team got 14 points from Mazin Tiea against Niagara. Chad Vincent-simon had 13 points, Jadon Tillman finished with 12 points and Jesiah Deerr had 11 points.

On Saturday, Tiea had 20 points, Deerr finished with 15 points while Vincent-simon and Glade Tutu added 10 points each.

Despite forcing 31 turnovers, the St. Clair women's team shot under 20 per cent in the tough loss against Niagara. Janae Smith had 15 points and 10 rebounds. Shaelyn Murphy added 13 points and Kaitlyn Overeem was held to 11 points.

LANCER BASKETBALL SPLIT

The Windsor Lancers snapped a three-game OUA men's basketball losing streak with an 83-78 win over the Guelph Gryphons on Sunday while the women's team has lost three in a row after a 72-65 loss to to Guelph.

Daniel Cummings had 27 points for the men's team with Yohann Sam finishing with 14 points and Denzel Cummins and Segun Akimbulumo each adding 11 points.

Reine Ndome and Vanessa Budimunda each had 14 points for the women's team with Leah Tate adding 10 points.

LANCERS HOCKEY SWEPT

The Windsor Lancers dropped back-to-back games in Thunder Bay to the Lakehead Thunderwol­ves while the women lost 4-1 to the Toronto Varsity Blues.

The men, who lost 6-2 to Lakehead on Friday, fell 6-3 on Saturday with Aaron Shaw, Holden Wade and Mason Kohn scoring goals.

Jessica Gribbon was the lone Lancer to beat Toronto goalie and Amherstbur­g native Erica Fryer, who made 20 saves.
