Express rally late to edge Lightning

The Windsor Express rallied late to beat the league-leading London Lightning on the road Sunday.

The Express erased a seven-point deficit with under six minutes to play to earn a 116-114 win in Basketball Super League play.

“It was a big win for the team going into the first place team's house and coming away with a victory,” Express head coach Bill Jones said.

The Express closed the game on a 21-12 run to even their road record at 2-2 while improving to 4-3 on the season.

“I told our players that we had to focus and play the fourth quarter with energy and effort,” Jones said. “We played tough defence and made big shots to win.”

Chris Jones scored 12 of his team-high 33 points in the fourth quarter while Paul Harrison had eight of his 25 points over the final 12 minutes.

Ja'myrin Jackson had 18 points against the Lightning (8-4) while Sam Muldrow added 14 points in 13 minutes off the bench and Latin Davis chipped in with 18 points while Tyler Groce finished with a team-high 13 rebounds.

After three games on the road, the Express return home Wednesday to face the Newfoundla­nd Rogues at the WFCU Centre. Game time is 7 p.m.

FLYERS DROP ADMIRALS

The Leamington Flyers jumped to a three-goal lead after the first period and secured a 5-4 road win over the Caledon Admirals in Ontario Junior Hockey League play on Saturday.

The Flyers, who held a commanding 47-20 edge in shots, extended the lead to 5-1 in the third period, but the Admirals scored the game's final three goals.

Alex Cunningham had a goal and two assists to lead the Flyers (2910-5-1). Matthew Thomas, Jason Davenport, Jason Daraiche and Gabe Piccolo also scored against the Admirals (7-34-1-5).

VIPERS HIT SKIDS

The Lasalle Vipers have dropped three games in a row after Sunday's 5-2 road loss to the Elmira Sugar Kings in a Greater Ontario Junior Hockey League crossover game.

Elmira (28-13-0-2), which is second in the Midwestern Conference, scored three power-play goals courtesy of 10 manpower chances to rally from an early 2-1 deficit.

Nicholas Graniero and Patrick Mcmanus scored for the Vipers (2713-1-0), who have slipped to fourth place in the Western Conference.

MOLSON MASTERS QUALIFYING

Dan Aqwa, who won the title in 2016, earned the top qualifying spot in the Open Division for the 68th Molson Masters.

Aqwa led the way with a fivegame bowling total of 1,142 while Tim Johnson finished second with a 1,125 total and three-time champion Darren Alexander next with a 1,112 total. It took a score of 978 to reach the match-play round, which will held on Saturday at Revs Rose Bowl.

In the senior division, former champ Mark Morand topped the field in Senior Division qualifying with a four-game total of 892. Chris Moxley was next at 868 and Joel Lewsaw was third with an 851 total with the match-play cut set at 767.

73'S BATTLE CANADIENS

The Essex 73's and Lakeshore Canadiens continue to jockey for top spot in the Bill Stobbs Division of the Provincial Junior Hockey League. The 73's moved back into first place by a point on Sunday with a 5-2 win over the Blenheim Blades after Lakeshore, which has two games in hand, regained the top spot on Saturday with a 4-2 win over the Mooretown Flags. Meanwhile, the Amherstbur­g Admirals dropped a pair of games with a 6-3 loss to the Flags on Sunday and a 4-1 loss to the Wheatley Sharks on Saturday.

Essex (29-4-1-2) scored the only three goals of the third period to beat the third-place Blades (2710-1-1). Cael Mccabe had a pair of goals for the 73's with Jayden Seguin, Luka Milosevic and Conor Dembinski adding goals.

Josh Cyrenne, Marco Sladoje, Bryce Scarlett and Kyle Walker scored for the Canadiens (30-4-00) in the road win over the fifthplace Flags (14-15-5-2).

The sixth-place Admirals (829-0-0) tied the game in the third period before the Flags regrouped to take the win. Brett Jones, Jacob Archer and Stefan Jacobs scored for Amherstbur­g.

On Saturday, the fourth-place Sharks (21-11-2-1) scored the only three goals in the third period to beat the Admirals. Kyle Beau scored twice for Wheatley with Kyle Kelly and Braedon Caetano adding goals. Archer replied for Amherstbur­g.
