Kennedy Clippers win overall title in WECSSAA wrestling
The Kennedy Clippers claimed 11 medals, including five gold, to capture the WECSSAA overall team wrestling championship, which was held at Riverside high school on Wednesday.
Meanwhile, the Massey Mustangs claimed five gold medals in capturing the boys division and the L'essor Aigles' secured five gold medals to claim the girls division.
Kennedy's Kevin Rakouska took the boys 83 kg division while teammate Ahmed Nasah claimed the 51 kg division, Jayden Brooks won the 44 kg division. Al-marsri Nouraldeen won the boys 38 kg division, with Akina Baldassi taking the girls 64 kg weight class.
Massey's win in the boys division saw Ali Syed claim the 54 kg division with teammates Aarush Deka taking the 67.5 kg division, Nash Renaud the 72 kg division, Shamrez Khan the 95 kg division and Anas Wasef Rawadan the 130 kg division as the Mustangs earned 10 medals overall to take the title.
Renaud was also named MVP on the boys side while Vista Academy's Eva Stajic took home MVP honours on the girls side after winning the 57.5 kg division.
On the girls side, the Aigles got gold-medal efforts from Taylor Quenneville in the 47.5 kg division, Brianna Dumouchelle in the 61 kg class, Taylor Pruyn in the 72 kg division, Angela Derbyshire in the 89 kg class and Hannah Webster in the 95 kg division, with L'essor taking six medals overall.
Wrestlers will be back at Riverside next Wednesday for the SWOSSAA championships, looking to earn a trip to the Hamilton area for the OFSAA championships, which are set for March 5 and 6.
