The Carolina Hurricanes have re-signed depth forward Brendan Lemieux to a US$775,000 contract for next season.

President and general manager Don Waddell announced the new contract Monday.

Lemieux, 27, is the son of former NHL player Claude Lemieux and recently reached the 300-game milestone. He's in his first season with Carolina, recording three points and getting into three fights in 25 games.

“Brendan has brought an element of toughness to our lineup,” Waddell said in a statement. “He understands his role with our club, and we're glad to keep him in Raleigh for another season.”

The deal comes after a week in which the Hurricanes acquired two skilled forwards ahead of the trade deadline by getting winger Jake Guentzel from Pittsburgh and centre Evgeny Kuznetsov from Washington in a pair of deals with Metropolitan Division rivals.

The University of Southern California rode a Pac-12 Tournament championship to its best ranking in 38 years.

The Trojans moved up to No. 3 in The Associated Press top 25 women's basketball poll Monday after topping Stanford to win the conference tournament for the first time since 2014, their only other time in the title game. It's the highest ranking for USC since the final poll of the 1986 season, when the team was also third.

South Carolina remained a unanimous No. 1, receiving all 35 first-place votes from the AP U.S. media panel. The Gamecocks head into the NCAA Tournament undefeated for the second consecutive season after surviving the SEC Tournament semifinals on a last-second three-pointer by Kamilla Cardoso.

The Gamecocks then beat LSU for the title in a game marred by late ejections.
