Vipers all even after Maroons pot winner in triple overtime

It was a bitter ending for the visiting Lasalle Vipers.

The Chatham Maroons used a two-man power play to score the game-winning goal midway through the third overtime on Sunday for a 5-4 victory.

With it, the best-of-seven Western Conference quarterfin­al series in the Greater Ontario Junior Hockey League is tied at 1-1. Game 3 is Wednesday in Lasalle. The Vipers built a 4-2 lead through 40 minutes with captain Owen Findlay scoring twice and Kyle Greene and Nicholas Graniero adding single goals.

The Maroons tied it with a pair of goals in a span of 58 seconds early in the third period.

It stayed that way through two overtimes before Ryan Clark was called for hooking and Brendan

Gouin for roughing, which gave Chatham the decisive two-man advantage.

FOUR LANCER MEDALS

The Windsor Lancers earned four medals at the U Sports track and field championsh­ips, which wrapped up three days of competitio­n on Saturday in Winnipeg.

Ben Tilson earned a pair of medals in relay. Tilson teamed with Ryan Mahabir, Cameron John-dunslow and Weagbe Mombo to secure a silver medal in the men's 4x200-metre relay in a time of one minute and 27.75 seconds.

He also grabbed a bronze medal with the men's 4x400-metre relay, along with Noah Waldmann, Paul Popescu and Will Mcbride, in a time of 3:19.03.

A.J. Stanat captured the silver medal in the men's shot put with a throw of 16.85 metres while Mandy

Brunet also secured a silver medal in the women's triple jump with a leap of 12.57 metres.

Windsor, which will play host to the national championsh­ip next year, finished sixth overall in the men's division and ninth overall in the women's division.

FLYERS LEAD SERIES

The Leamington Flyers have jumped out to a quick 2-0 series lead on the Georgetown Raiders.

A 2-0 road win on Saturday has the third-seeded Flyers up 2-0 in the best-of-seven Western Conference quarterfin­al series in the Ontario Junior Hockey League against the sixth-seeded Raiders.

The Flyers, who opened the series with a 6-2 win at home on Friday, took a 1-0 lead in the second period on Saturday on a goal by Chris O'flaherty. Adrian Bosev sealed the win with an empty-net goal and Sebastian Gatto made 29 saves to record the shutout.

The series shifts back to Leamington on Thursday for Game 3.

PJHL SECOND ROUND

Playoff action in the Bill Stobbs Division of the Provincial Junior Hockey League will quickly move into the second round on Tuesday.

The top-seed Lakeshore Canadiens will play host to the fourth-seeded Wheatley Sharks in the first game of a best-of-seven series on Tuesday. Lakeshore swept eighth-seeded Walpole Island in the first round while the Sharks took out the Mooretown Flags in five games after a 2-1 win on Friday to close out the series.

Meanwhile, the second-seeded Essex 73's will face off against the third-seeded Blenheim Blades. Essex is at home for Game 1 of the best-of-seven series on Tuesday. .

EXPRESS PLAYERS SHINE

Four members of the Windsor Express took part in the first Basketball Super League All-star Game on Saturday in Sudbury.

Shadell Millinghau­s and Latin Davis each scored 28 points to help Team Blue to a 197-170 win over Team Red. Paul Harrison added 15 points for the winners. Meanwhile, Ty Groce finished with 22 points for Team Red.
