Politicians right on housing grant

-

I have read the comments from those who oppose Windsor's mayor and council refusing to bend to the one-size-fits-all housing moneys being thrown at Canadian communities by the federal government.

There is a housing shortage in Canada, a problem that has been created by a lack of immigration management and planning by the Liberals. We did not have enough housing to begin with — increasing the population from 38 million to over 40 million in a short period of time has only exacerbated the problem.

The Liberals feel that throwing money at the problem, disregarding any planning that the recipients may want to implement in deciding what type of housing best suits their communities, is the best option.

Frankly, it's ridiculous. I am glad that our city chose to stand up for our neighbourhoods. I wonder if those who are so in favour of the demands the Liberals were making actually own houses themselves?

I will assume that they would like to, but the issues we face in that regard are not the result of anything the city has done.

The fact is, Windsor is a city of many long-standing neighbourhoods.

I would venture to say that the majority of city residents own their own homes in these neighbourhoods and they like them the way they are now and were designed to be. No one wants to see the house next door torn down by an out-of-town developer who plops a fourplex that can accommodate 16 people, take the money and run.

It ruins the neighbourhood, drops the property value, and demands more services. Where are you going to park all of the vehicles for example?

The City did not rule out fourplexes, they just want to incorporate them into newly planned areas and areas where they currently exist, and I support that.

It's called planning.
