Apartment building fire leaves person without home

A blaze at the Wheelton Manor apartment complex Friday caused $100,000 in damage and left one person displaced.

Crews were called to a fire in the 300 block of Glengarry Avenue Friday evening in downtown Windsor.

It was the second time in just over a month that fire broke out at the complex.

Windsor police closed several streets in the area to vehicular traffic — University Avenue East from Mcdougall to Aylmer avenues and Glengarry Avenue from University Avenue East to Wyandotte Street East — for about an hour.

In a Saturday morning update, officials said one person was displaced but there were no injuries.

Chief fire prevention officer Mike Coste said the cause of the fire, which occurred on the main floor of the building, has been deemed suspicious.

The building is managed by the Windsor Essex Community Housing Corp. and offers subsidized and non-profit residential units aimed at low-income households and geared-to-income seniors.

Just over a month ago, a major fire at the same location displaced numerous residents.

They were housed in a temporary shelter set up by the city at the WFCU Centre.

The fire started on the seventh floor and most of the damage to the building from that fire was to the seventh and eighth floors.

Coste estimated the damage from that fire at $1 million.

It was expected the Ontario Fire Marshall's report on the cause of the blaze would take at least a month.

A firefighter was injured. Some residents were transported to hospital, but none were hospitalized for smoke inhalation.
