Windsor's winter set to be overall warmest on record
The winter of 2023-24 will go down as the overall warmest in Windsor recorded history.
Environment Canada meteorologist Steven Flisfeder said the average mean temperature over the months of December, January, and February — the year's three coldest months are known as meteorological winter — was 1.4 Celsius.
The previous record for average mean temperature, which takes the nighttime temperature into account along with the daytime high, was 1.3 C in 2015-16.
Of course, there were also many days much warmer than 1.4 C over the course of this unusually balmy winter. Based on data measured at Windsor Airport, the average daytime high temperature over the entire months of December, January, and February was 4.7 C.
Windsor didn't set a winter-long record for daytime high, which is the warmest temperature reached during a given day. That honour belongs to the 5.2 C set in 2015-16.
But this winter still offered up some relatively nice days.
The average daytime high in February was 7.1 C, which fell just short of hitting the record for that month. In February 2017, the average daily high was 7.2 C.
But last month did produce a different all-time weather record.
Windsor experienced the warmest single February day in city history this year. On Feb. 27, the daytime high was 21.2 C.
It was the warmest February day since the start of record keeping in 1867, and smashed the previous record that had stood for nearly a quarter century. The previous record high for February was 20.4 C, set on Feb. 26, 2000.
While last week didn't produce any more weather records, it offered up some nice days. The temperature climbed to about 19 C on last Tuesday. The high for Wednesday was 20 C, followed by close to 15 C Thursday, and a forecasted high of 11 C on Friday.
The official start of spring was Tuesday, March 19.
