Windsor police have arrested a local man for allegedly threatening to kill Mayor Drew Dilkens.

A representative of the mayor's office sent the Windsor Star a short statement from Dilkens on Thursday about the death threat, but said the mayor was not available to talk about it.

“A threat to the life of any citizen warrants serious attention,” Dilkens said in the statement. “I appreciate the swift action taken by Windsor police and thank them for their service.”

Police said Dilkens' office received a call Wednesday morning from a man making threats against the mayor.

The Windsor Police Service's major crimes unit launched an investigation and quickly identified the suspect.

Around 9 p.m. the same day, officers went to the man's home in the 900 block of Wyandotte Street East and made an arrest.

The Windsor Police Service would not provide any more details about the case, stating the matter is now before the courts.

“However, we want to assure the public that cases involving death threats are treated with the utmost seriousness by our service and our investigation into this matter remains ongoing,” a police department spokesperson said in an email.

Daniel Young, 68, is charged with one count of uttering death threats.

Dilkens has faced other threats of harm while in elected office.

A Windsor woman was arrested and charged with “threats to property” in 2022 after a bomb threat targeting the mayor's home was made on social media during the Ambassador Bridge blockade.
