Wipe away minor etching on glass
Question: We have a problem and are hopeful your expertise can offer a solution. We cleaned the plate glass that surrounds our deck with Spray 9 during a time of direct sunlight and now we are left with a white/ foggy stain that doesn’t want to come off. Cheers. Kimberly (Winnipeg)
Answer: It sounds as though the glass may be etched, in which case you might need to replace the glass. However, here are a few tried and tested solutions for removing minor etching on glass: Spray the glass with a 50/50 mix of ammonia and water. Leave for 10 minutes and then wipe (the glass will look clear at first but may fog after drying). Lime Away is a commercial product that has proven successful and so is Krazy Kloth (available online). As a last resort, wipe the glass with petroleum jelly, leave for 10 minutes and then wash the glass with a 50/50 mix of vinegar and water.
Question: This past winter we were away for three months and we left our vehicle in a parking lot. When we arrived home in April, we found that some red squirrels had made their home under the hood, chewing out insulation, wires, etc. (to the extent of $500 damage). After having the vehicle repaired we noticed the odd squirrel scurrying under the hood again. My husband purchased a rodent repellant spray from Canadian Tire and sprayed under the hood. Now when we turn on the air conditioner, the smell is unbelievable. We tried spraying Febreeze under the hood to no avail. Hope you can help, the smell is just sickening. Thanks. Love your column. Answer: The best news is that the smell will eventually disappear, unless an animal has died somewhere in the car. In the meantime, you have a few options. You can take the car to a detailer who will put it through a purifying machine, or you may want to consider renting an ozone machine. This little machine is not recommended for regular use but it is great for enclosed areas affected by smoke or flood damage or extreme smells. The machine lets out a molecule called O3 (which of course is oxygen with an extra molecule attached). The third molecule escapes into the air and absorbs odours. These machines can be rented at tool rental retailers as well as some hardware stores. Wash the car interior with shampoo and water and leave windows open as much as possible. Liven up water on a hot day
Fill an eight-cup juice pitcher with sparkling water, lemon wedges, half a cup of sugar and one whole nutmeg. Enjoy!
Wash and cut a cucumber, add it to a pitcher of water. Refrigerate overnight. Remove cucumber slices and add a sprig of mint before serving.
Instead of gulping down an entire glass of juice, freeze juice in ice cube trays. Drop one flavoured ice cube into each glass of water.
Add fresh or frozen fruit such as lemons, berries (strawberries, blueberries and black berries), orange slices, mango, melons, peach or kiwi. After you drink the water, refreeze the fruit and make a smoothie, later on during the day (now that’s being frugal), I enjoy your questions and tips, keep them coming. Missed a column?
