Couple of punts can really stir up fans

SundayXtra - - OPINION -

THE Winnipeg Blue Bombers announced Friday both general manager Joe Mack and CEO Garth Buchko had been fired and named former Bomber fullback Wade Miller as acting CEO. Readers tackled the news with some passionate opinions.

Wade Miller sure has the football credentials and business credentials, but it bears pointing out that he is now a rookie when it comes to the business of football. I’m guessing he will be a very quick study, though. Anyway, it’s abundantly clear why Mack got the axe, but what was the rationale for turfing Buchko? He was probably on the job just long enough to find his feet and then BOOM, he’s gone.

Two down and one more big decision to make. Blow up the board of directors and start over. None of the members of the current board should ever be allowed to represent the Bombers again.

This action by the Bombers is long over due. Miller has the huge task of evaluating the entire football operations. The evaluation has to result in the next logical move to replace Crowton immediately and evaluate Burke’s performance for the remaining games. Get it done Wade!!

Okay, the disgruntled fans got what they wanted. Don’t see how that’s going to impact the on- field performances, because the players have to play the games. But it’s just in time for NFL cuts to begin. ( And, for you NFL snobs, they are NOT cast- offs. There’s just too many of them to all make even a 60 team league.) A lot of good football players will be looking for work.

There is a higher power. Wade is an excellent choice. I hope he finds a place for Doug Brown who is another bulldog. We need football people to run a football operation.

Agreed that changes are needed on the BOD as well but it would be an even worse nightmare if everyone but some of the players were all tossed at the same time. I know a lot of people blame Burke for what is happening. We really don’t know how much his hands have been tied by Buchko and Mack. I expect with the mess in management has affected player and coaches attitude and morale.

Nothing is going to change overnight. I don’t think Burke has really had a good chance yet. So that’s three major positions changed. Now we need to give them a chance.

I like the choice of Miller as CEO, because of how he continued to make it on Bomber teams despite his lack of size and athletic ability. He did by being a smart and dedicated. If those qualities can be transferred to handling people and running an organization, we’ll be in good hands, I hope.

Ah this is the urinating in your pants part... Now lets see how it feels in a few months... We are entering NFL cuts with no one to handle those. A glorious opportunity to add talent to the team lost. Had the leak not happened, the board may have decided to wait until later in the year or end of season. Mack and Buchco have nothing to do with how the team is performing now and it would not have hurt the team to have someone around for the NFL cuts.

Mack didn’t care and Buchko was in over his head. Wade is a great choice for the business side of operations. Duane Ford would be a great choice as GM. Buchko can go back to organizing cruises. Fix the QB situation. How does your number 1 become your number 3? We’ve probably got the best running back in the league but he doesn’t get the ball enough. We’ve become a laughing stock. I fear for the Labour Day weekend.

At least we can see that Miller doesn’t spend half of his day in a beauty parlor getting his hair permed and frosted.
