CANADIAN VINTAGE

ZOOMER Magazine - - MAIL -

In an age of disposable home furnishings and flimsy fungibles, Jeanne Beker’s homage [“A Certain Vintage,” July/August] to the homespun emblems of our Canadian past makes for an uplifting and practical read. It was an era in which almost everyone was a craftsperson, and Jeanne Beker gives it due respect.

The wonderful 6,000-squarefoot multi-dealer market on Hwy. 7 east of Peterborough Beker mentions deserves a name, however: Nostalgic Journey has been around for 19 years, and the owner, Gail, won’t give her age but probably remembers when the Second World War ended. As the energetic, youthful and knowledgeable owner, Gail has been known to treat her 25-plus vendors to a sit-down dinner at the end of a particularly prosperous year.

Like Jeanne, I revel in a great bargain and love the artistic durability of handwork. An unabashed plug: Nostalgic Journey is my own best source for finding such treasures. —Peter Currier, Peterborough, Ont.
