PETER’S STORY

Peter Ackelauer of Christopher Lake, Saskatchewan builds log homes for a living. As the owner of the business, work is one of his biggest passions, and often requires him to juggle multiple tasks.

Peter’s vision had never been great, leading him to struggle seeing basic things like license plates, street signs and house numbers.

“About two years ago, my eyes were getting worse and I was having difficulty seeing clearly five to six feet away. I had extreme difficulty seeing at night. It got to the point where I almost looked at giving up my business because of it.”

The extent of Peter’s vision loss shocked his eye care professional. “My eye surgeon explained that my cataracts were extremely bad. His words were, ‘You’re legally blind. You’ll probably be legally blind with glasses within two to three months. After surgery, the first thing Peter did was vacuum his office because of all the sawdust he hadn’t seen. He went on a road trip, driving 5,000 kilometres in six days.
