ALANNA MITCHELL is an internatio­nal awardwinni­ng journalist, author and playwright who has explored the intersecti­on of science and society for CBC’s Quirks and Quarks, the New York Times, Maclean’s, Canadian Geographic and in her latest book, 2018’s The Spinning Magnet: The Electromag­netic Force that Created the Modern World – and Could Destroy It. She turned her 2009 book Seasick: The Global Ocean in Crisis into a one-woman play, which she has performed in five countries. Mitchell was named a fellow of the Royal Canadian Geographic­al

Society in 2015, an honour she shares with her subject, B.C. anthropolo­gist, ethnobotan­ist and explorer WWade Davis. In hher first story foor Zoomer, she eexplains how Davis feell in love with Colombia,C why he returns to it time and again, and why he can’t let go in “River of Redemption”
