Villa O'Higgins

In a scenic valley at the the south end of Chile's greatest road trip, the rugged Carretera Austral (“Southern Highway”), the town of Villa O'Higgins isn't quite the end of the line. Sturdy travelers bound for Argentine Patagonia can take a comfortable motor launch across glacier-lined Lake O'Higgins to the border post of Candelario Mancilla and then proceed by foot, bicycle or horseback to the Argentine border. There they can continue along the shore of Laguna del Desierto – lugging their bicycles over their shoulders in spots - or take another launch to the south end, where there are buses to the trekking capital of El Chaltén.

En un escénico valle en el extremo sur del mejor viaje por carretera de todo Chile, a lo largo de la rústica Carretera Austral, comprenderás que el pueblo de Villa O'Higgins no es del todo el final del camino. Los viajeros más enérgicos rumbo a la Patagonia argentina pueden abordar una cómoda lancha de motor a través del Lago O'Higgins, que está rodeado de glaciares, hasta el puerto fronterizo de Candelario Mancilla, para luego proceder a pie, en bicicleta o a caballo hasta la frontera con Argentina. Allí pueden continuar por la orilla de la Laguna del Desierto –cargando las bicicletas en hombros en ciertos lugares– o tomar otra lancha hasta el extremo sur, donde hay buses que llevan a la capital del excursionismo, El Chaltén.
