The Third Patagonia Photo Contest this year received nearly 2,300 entries from participants from around the world, had among its thirteen winners: six photographers from Chile, two photographers from Argentina, two photographers from Brazil, and one each from Belgium, Poland and the United Kingdom.
The participating sent images of Chilean and Argentine Patagonia in four categories: Nature, Environment, Travel & Culture and Outdoor Sports. These were judged based on content, composition and originality by a panel that included Celine Frers, a photographer from Buenos Aires; Brian O'Keefe, a photographer from Oregon; and Pablo Valenzuela Valliant, a photographer from Santiago.
El Tercer Concurso de Fotografia de la Patagonia de este año recibió casi 2.300 fotos de participantes de todo el mundo, y tuvo entre sus trece ganadores dos fotógrafos de Argentina, dos fotógrafos de Brasil y uno de Bélgica, Polonia y el Reino Unido.
Los fotógrafos del concurso hicieron llegar sus imágenes de la Patagonia Chilena y Argentina en cuatro categorías: Naturaleza, Medioambiente, Viajes & Cultura y Deportes Outdoor. Éstas fueron juzgadas en base a su contenido, composición y originalidad por un jurado que incluyó a Celine Frers, fotógrafa argentina de Buenos Aires; Brian O'Keefe, fotógrafo de Estados Unidos; y Pablo Valenzuela Valliant, fotógrafo chileno.
With his dramatic photo titled “Preparing for winter,” Angel Adaro won the grand prize. Adaro, 45, from El Chaltén, Argentina, told Patagon Journal he stumbled upon his spectacular top photo by chance. “I always have my camera with me, and on a trip from El Chaltén to Calafate I found myself in front of this scene. Although I was in a hurry, I dedicated easily at least an hour. It goes without saying that I arrived late to my meeting.”
For more than two decades, Adaro has pursued photography as a hobby. “I think it's a great way to stay grounded with the land and disconnect. I also like very much being able to transmit something powerful with my images,” he says. “El Chaltén has very special places; I feel fortunate to live here. The skies of Patagonia are extraordinary.”
As grand prize winner, Adaro will receive a winter trek in Torres del Paine with tour operator Chile Nativo. He will also receive a stay at Hotel Remota in nearby Puerto Natales, and a trip for 2 on the Navimag ship, Puerto Montt - Puerto Natales. He also won a gift certificate of 150,000 Chilean pesos for use in the Patagonia stores of Chile.
Con su imponente fotografía titulada “Preparando la Invernada”, Angel Adaro fue el ganador absoluto. Adaro, de 45 años, y residente de El Chaltén, Argentina, cuenta a Patagon Journal que la foto ganadora fue casual, no fue a buscarla. “Siempre llevo mi equipo, y en un viaje de El Chaltén a El Calafate me encontré con ese momento. Si bien tenía prisa, le dedique fácil una hora. De más está decir que llegué tarde a la entrevista.”
Durante más de dos décadas Adaro hace fotografía como aficionado. “Creo que es un gran cable a tierra para desconectar, y me gusta mucho el tema de poder transmitir o generar algo con las imágenes a las personas”, dice Adaro, y agrega: “El Chaltén tiene lugares muy especiales; me siento afortunado de vivir ahí. Los cielos de la Patagonia son únicos”.
Como premio, Adaro recibirá un viaje de trekking en invierno en el Parque Nacional Torres del Paine con Chile Nativo. También recibirá alojamiento en Hotel Remota de Puerto Natales, y un pasaje para dos personas en el buque Navimag, ruta Puerto Montt – Puerto Natales. Además, se le hizo entrega de una gift card de $150.000 pesos chilenos en tiendas Patagonia de Chile.
The winner of Readers Choice Award, Roberto Burdiles, a profesor at the University of Bio-Bio in Concepcion, Chile, courtesy of Tompkins Conservation, will receive 2 nights in the Valle Chacabuco lodge at the future Patagonia National Park. All the second place winners in the categories will receive handmade Karün sunglasses.
All of the winning photos in the contest are part of an exhibition at the Centro de Arte Alameda in Santiago during June and July, as well as will appear in a commemorative photo contest book.
El ganador del Premio de los Lectores, Roberto Burdiles, un académico de la Universidad del Bíobío, en Concepción, recibirá alojamiento para 2 noches cortesía de Tompkins Conservation en el lodge de Valle Chacabuco del futuro Parque Nacional Patagonia. Todos los ganadores del segundo lugar en las categorías recibirán unos anteojos Karün.
Todos las fotografías ganadoras son parte de una exposición en el Centro de Arte Alameda de Santiago, durante junio y julio de 2017, además de aparecer en un libro conmemorativo del concurso.
